Parenting Advice

At the baby shower I went to, they had a place where you could write down some parenting advice on a card, that they would put in a photo album for the mom to be, to keep and read, and enjoy as a special keepsake.

They said it could be special advice geared toward boys, but I thought that saying “don’t be surprised at how many times you have to say, ‘keep your hands out of your pants,’” to little boys would be that “sentimental” of a piece of advice to write on a keepsake card.

I thought about how cool it would be to continually receive those books of advice from moms who’d been through all the different stages before.

I was talking to an older mom, after we’d written our sentiments, and she told me what she’d written down. She said that the best advice she’d received was, “don’t forget to enjoy your children. You spend so much time training, disciplining, and shaping them, getting through the day, but you can enjoy them through this process.”

This was a great piece of advice for me. I do spend so much time worrying about how they are turning out, and thinking through ways to train them, and teach them, that sometimes I think I forget to enjoy the process, to enjoy the moments, to just enjoy them.

So, if you were to write down a piece of advice or a quote about parenting, what would it be? What is the best piece of parenting advice you’ve received?

Kristin, it may not have gone on the card, but I have made a mental note. The first time & the hundreth time I tell Jeremiah to get his hands out of his pants I will think of you. =)

You hear it said a million and one times when you’re pregnant, “Enjoy your time with them, it goes by so fast.” You smile at the older women who say this to you, and take their well-meaning advice, all the while thinking, yeah right. Then, you blink and they’re teenagers, and you’re wondering what the heck happened, and how did you miss all those years?!?! I’m trying to make up for all the years I didn’t enjoy them. All the years I spent training and teaching and not enjoying the moment. The best advice I’ve been given recently, is that “It’s never too late!” I’m holding on to that one with all I’ve got.
