Garden…

I was so excited to see that the seeds I’d planted are growing! (last year I did not have luck with seeds) These are zucchini plants, started from seeds:

I also, didn’t want to start my first gardening experiment with something elaborate, and also new that the soil in the spot I picked is good soil, with a little compost mixed in. I started digging, and with some occasional help from the boys, and some major help from my dad, I ended up with a humble little garden, that is doing well so far- I’m already loving using basil in pastas and salads.

In the garden is:

~Watermelon and Pumpkin (These are the boys’ plants, and they planted them, the pumpkin is from a seed)
~Tomatoes, different varieties
~Basil and Cilantro
~Yellow Summer squash, and Zucchini
~Snap peas, and green beans, (from seeds)
~Marigolds at the edges

I read in Southern Living that a good way to give tomatoes a lot of support while growing, is to take a tomato cage, turn it upside down, and over the tomato plant. Then take bamboo sticks and shove the ends into the ground, securing the tomato cage, and tying at the top, to make a sort of tee pee shape.

So there is the beginning of my “Garden 2009″ experiment, we’ll see how it goes!
~Anyone else have a garden? What are you planting?

We did seeds this year also for the first time and they are doing good. We have squash, bush beans, eggplant, and cucumber. We will see what happens but it is fun to try. Good luck.

We used to have garden of tomatoes, bitter leaves, pineapple, tangerine, and some flowers (wildflowers, etc)…but I’m not right now. Glad you are enjoying the adventure—as able please continue to keep us in the loop. Reading your list makes me hungry. :-)

Your garden looks nice, nothing better than fresh veggies. We planted some tomatoes but I have been trying to talk my hubby into building a raised bed so we can plant more veggies. Besides with today’s economy it would be a good thing to have.

Your garden looks like it is coming along nicely Kristin. Glad all the rain hasn’t washed it out! I look forward to seeing the progress (via your blog of course) as the weeks pass. Flowers, fruits, and veggies – so fun isn’t it?!

Hey we basically have the same garden! How funny! I planted lettuce and spinach too. Oh, and my mom gave Ragan an eggplant for easter (I know kinda funny!) So we have that planted too! You are already getting stuff! I am jealous! I know I will be harvesting soon too! (At least I hope to!)
