Homemade Laundry Soap

My friend was telling me about how much she loved making homemade laundry soap, so I decided to give it a try.  I searched online for recipes, and watched a couple of videos to get an idea how to do this.  (most of my info comes from here, and here.) I was especially inspired when I saw how inexpensive this laundry soap turns out to be!  (around .01- .03 cents per load, one conversion here.)

I really expected this to be a daunting task, and felt like I need to carve out a lot of time in order to get this done, but from start to finish it only took me about 30 minutes.

 The recipe I used:

  • 1/3 bar Fels Naptha or other type of soap, as listed above
  • ½ cup washing soda
  • ½ cup borax powder
  • 1/2 oz. essential oil (optional, I used lemon)

supplies

~You will also need a small bucket, about 2 gallon size~

Grate the soap and put it in a sauce pan. Add 6 cups water and heat it until the soap melts. Add the washing soda and the borax and stir until it is dissolved. Remove from heat. Pour 4 cups hot water into the bucket. Now add your soap mixture and stir. Now add 1 gallon plus 6 cups of water and stir. Let the soap sit for about 24 hours and it will gel. You use ½ cup per load.

*If you are interested in giving it a try I suggest reading this site.

    Weekend Highlights~ S.S.S.

    High points:
    • Our family’s nice long, but not too long drive to Memphis.
    • Finding out my husband’s photographs on the DCB DVD were nominated for a dove award
    • Staying in a hotel, eating dinner out and going to a basketball game all very inexpensively due to deal searching, and coupons.
    • Watching Bobby Jackson on the Kings steal the ball and shoot 3 pointers.  (I’m glad he’s back on the Kings!)
    • Watching Blue glued to the game, Cooper dancing to all the music, and listening to Aiden ponder about things like, the grizzly mascot being a gorrilla, and wondering how gorrillas get jerseys?  Why do the dancing girls not have shirts or pants on?
    • The Kings winning the game.
    •  Free breakfast.
    • Safe drive home in the rain.

    Low points:

    •  My injured back, (from jumping in the air, trying to touch the ceiling while also pulling my knees up- for a workout, I don’t just randomly do that) hurt really bad the whole time, and the pain increased due to walking around downtown, and up to our seats.  I had to find heat wraps and aleve to help me out.
    • Blue started coughing through the night, and hasn’t stopped yet.
    • Stayed up late and didn’t sleep well due to said back pain, and coughing.

    However:

    • Getting away with my family and spending concentrated time together was incredible.  We talked, laughed, bonded and rested like we all needed to.  My husband said it was one of his favorite birthday’s we’ve celebrated together, and that makes me very happy!
    • Happy S.S.S.

My son stayed home from school sick today, so we were sitting around making up knock knock jokes, some of his were funny:

    • “Why did the door move houses? ….. It was tired of getting slammed.”
    • “Why did the tooth get in trouble at church?… It was too wiggly.”
    • And the best of all which made no sense, “Why did the moose cross the road?…. moo.”

My other two boys love to laugh, and my oldest loves to make them laugh, so he could say anything in joke form and they would be rolling in laughter.  It’s fun to watch….

This is my friend Lori. She is one of the most generous people I have ever met. The best way to describe her is that she has a heart for people. She is thoughtful, considerate, kind, fun, and real. She’s open about her struggles, which encourages open-ness in others. She doesn’t judge, but instead encourages. She’s the first to offer help, and seems to be continually thinking of ways to help, or give, or bless. She also gives of her time, which is often the most valuable thing we have. I feel very fortunate to have her as a friend!

    • The heart pizza worked- boys loved it.
    • Valentine boxes from the grandparents are fun!
    • Received the sweetest letter from my oldest boy.  Starting to cry just thinking about it.
    • Loving the flowers my husband brought me, even though it was “against the rules,” of our celebration.
    • My son’s last basketball game was awesome. They won 12-4 and he made two baskets.
    • The first half of my husband’s birthday was a success. He loved the card I got him, he “got” the birthday banner we made, which the boys decorated, and at the top I wrote, “It is your birthday.” (If you are an office fan, that will make sense to you…) We had fun with family and friends, and went on a really fun date- thanks to our parents who baby sat, and the other half, payed for our dinner!  Brody started his shopping with his gift cards, and we ate some delicious sushi.  I think I annoyed him appropriately calling him “birthday boy,” all day long, and Randy did a good job with the embarrassing pictures. All in all, I think he felt loved by those who love him, which was the goal of this very special birthday! Next weekend it’s time to party some more, while we watch our home team,Go Kings!
    • Hope you all had a good weekend.

    Happy 30th Birthday!

    February 14, 2009 - 8:08 am 6 Comments

    brody

Today is Brody’s 30th birthday!  I am a lucky person to have been able to spend the last 8 years with him by my side, and thrilled to be able to celebrate his 30th with him.

He had said that he  really wanted to see the Kings (basketball team)  play, so I went and looked up when they would be at the Memphis Grizzly stadium, and ironically they will be there the next weekend after his birthday!  So, we’ll celebrate partially today, and then again next weekend to watch the Kings play!

On his birthday I feel like I could never do or say enough to express to him how grateful I am for him, or to honor him good enough, but I’ll do my best.

Brody is an amazing person.  He’s patient, he’s kindhearted, he’s determined, dependable,  he’s loyal, he’s funny, he’s inventive, he’s creative.  I honestly don’t know where I’d be in life if he hadn’t married me when he did, and I am so grateful that our youthful impulsiveness has been the biggest blessing in our lives.  We have three of the most amazing little boys, and a wonderful feeling of completeness.  We’ve grown up together over the years, and been through many ups and downs.  Through it all he’s remained my best friend. The quote we’ve used to describe our marriage has always been, “we’ll be fine as long as we’ve got each other, and some snacks.”

I am so grateful to have spent a tenth of his life with him, and happy to look forward to the rest of our lives together.

    *Happy 30th Birthday Brody!

Now you go, and wish him happy birthday
