He chose the shirt to match his brothers’,
the pants because he’s a basketball player,
and the socks will make him go fast as “Lightning” so he can win a trophy.
If I thought through my clothes that way, I wonder what I’d end up wearing?

Hey babe—Ask his father about tights and baby blankets and saw horses and vests without shirts. You’ll get some reasoning behind the child’s behavior.

My seven year old daughter often perplexes me with her choice of clothing. When she tries to explain (after I ask her to change into something which actually matches), I roll my eyes in hopelessness.

you know I had a shirt that used to make me run fast. it was totally 80’s and when i wore that shirt I was the fastest kind in class. seriously
